Sewanee Herbarium Collection Scanned!

All 9000 plant specimens in the Sewanee Herbarium were scanned this past weekend by a crew from University of Tennessee - Chattanooga lead by Dr. Joey Shaw. The Sewanee Herbarium is part of a consortium of Tennessee Herbaria that has received funding from the National Science Foundation to digitize their plant collections. The goal of the project is to have all Tennessee plant specimens scanned and part of a common database that can be used collectively within the state to inform research and conservation efforts relating the flora of Tennessee and, more broadly, the plant diversity of the southeastern United States. One of these projects will be the compilation of an online Vascular Plant

Lab Hosts Forest Soils Conference

My lab hosted the 37th Annual Central States Forest Soils Workshop at Sewanee this past week (Oct 10-11). Disciplines attending the workshop included foresters, soil scientists, educators, land use consultants and managers from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee. At the opening session, students in my Reading the Landscape Class presented posters describing the ecological consequences of land-use change on the Domain. The first full day of the workshop was spent exploring five of my research sites on the Domain and in Franklin State Forest where the participants learned about land-use legacies, vernal pools, oak population ecology and long-term forest dynamics on

Vernal Pools Pub Featured in NPR Interview

The local National Public Radio station interviewed me last week for a story about our vernal pools research. The research, recently published in the journal Wetlands, was also featured on the University of the South homepage.
