New Herbarium Fellows Announced

This fall, the Sewanee Herbarium launched its Undergraduate Fellows program funded by an endowment established in memory of Ashley Block C’13. The first two fellowships were awarded to Lillian Fulgham C’21 and Angus Pritchard C’22. Herbarium Undergraduate Fellows are selected from current or prospective Biology majors that express a strong interest in plants and plant-related research. They must have GPA of 3.3 or higher in Biology course and be willing to serve as an undergraduate ambassador for the mission of the Herbarium. The title and privileges associated with the Fellowship carry through that student’s time at Sewanee as long as they remain engaged with plant research and the Herbarium. Fellows receive a monetary award each academic year and they automatically qualify for consideration for a Herbarium Graduate Fellowships after they graduate. In addition to an annual scholarship award, Herbarium fellows are provided support to engage in research during the academic year and in the summer. They are given 24/7 access to the Herbarium where they are assigned a workspace as a place to hang their hat during their time at Sewanee. In their role as a Fellow, they are expected to promote plant awareness at Sewanee by generating plant-related programing for Sewanee students. They help lead Herbarium hikes and outreach programs and write articles for the Plant Press and Herbarium social media. They also serve as representatives of the Herbarium at various Sewanee events including admissions tours and Biology Department events.
