Dr. Evans was interviewed by the Chattanooga Times Free Press about how proposed changes to federal wetland protections would impact vernal pool habitats on the Cumberland Plateau. By redefining what bodies of water are afforded protection under the Clean Water Act, plateau wetlands such as vernal pools would be eliminated from consideration by the EPA. In their recent publication in the journal Wetlands, Evans and colleagues document the existence of an extensive network of vernal pools on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia and reveal how they are being threatened by loss of forest habitat.
